Frequently Asked Questions

These are some examples of questions we regularly receive regarding cases. The information contained below is not to be considered legal advice and it is understood that each case should be handled and considered individually.

Please contact us by phone or by stopping in to our office to secure representation by the Public Defender's Office. Even if you told the court that you would like an appointed attorney, it's still best to call us to confirm that we are able to represent you at court.

There is no difference. All of our Public Defenders have taken the bar exam and are licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio just like a privately retained attorney.

While it is not required that you wear a suit or dress to court, it is strongly encouraged that you dress neatly. Clothing should be appropriately fitted and not contain any vulgar or obscene words or gestures. Hats are not permitted in court.

  • NEVER discuss your case with anyone other than your attorney or staff members in our office.
  • Remember that all jail calls (except for calls to our office) are recorded and can be listened to by the Prosecutor. Anything you say on those calls may be used against you at trial.
  • Keep your attorney informed of your current address, phone number, and email.
  • Be sure to provide your attorney with a list of potential witnesses. This should include each witness's name, address, and phone number. The sooner this information is provided, the sooner your attorney can get in contact with them regarding their testimony.

Once our office represents you, your case will be assigned to an attorney in the relevant division (Felony, Misdemeanor, or Youth Defense). You cannot select which attorney is assigned to your case. This is done internally to help to keep a balanced case load for each of our attorneys. You are certainly welcome to hire a private attorney of your choice, and our office will cooperate with them in turning over any information we have prepared for your case if you choose to do so.
